Route of the protest march to free the Tolpuddle Martyrs, (1834), 1934
The route that the protest march to free the Tolpuddle Martyrs took. A vast demonstration took place on 21st April 1834 with up to 100, 000 people taking part. The Tolpuddle Martyrs were a group of 19th century agricultural labourers from Dorset who were convicted of swearing a secret oath as members of the Friendly Society of Agricultural Labourers. The rules of the society show it was clearly structured as a friendly society and operated as a trade-specific benefit society. At the time, friendly societies had strong elements of what would now be considered trade unions. Before 1824/25 the Combination Acts had outlawed combining or organising to gain better working conditions. The Tolpuddle Martyrs were subsequently sentenced to transportation to Australia. Their convictions caused public outcry and 800, 000 signatures were collected for their release. The march organised by thier supporters was one of the first successful political marches in the UK, and all, except James Hammett (who had a previous criminal record for theft) were released in 1836. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic route of the protest march to free the Tolpuddle Martyrs in 1834. The image takes us back to a significant moment in British history when up to 100,000 people united for justice and rallied against injustice. The Tolpuddle Martyrs were a group of agricultural laborers from Dorset who faced conviction for swearing a secret oath as members of the Friendly Society of Agricultural Laborers. In those times, friendly societies operated as trade-specific benefit societies with elements similar to modern-day trade unions. However, before 1824/25, combining or organizing for better working conditions was outlawed by the Combination Acts. Sentenced to transportation to Australia, their unjust punishment caused an uproar among the public. A staggering 800,000 signatures were collected demanding their release. In response, supporters organized this monumental protest march on April 21st, 1834 - one of the first successful political marches in UK history. The significance of this event cannot be overstated; it marked a turning point in workers' rights and highlighted society's growing demand for fair treatment and improved working conditions. Ultimately, all but one of the Tolpuddle Martyrs were released in 1836 after immense public pressure. This powerful print serves as a reminder that ordinary individuals have always possessed extraordinary power when they stand together against injustice and fight for what is right.
