The Royal Visit to Cambridge - college boat clubs marching past the Prince and Princess..., 1864. Creator: Unknown
The Royal Visit to Cambridge - college boat clubs marching past the Prince and Princess of Wales, 1864. 'In the grounds of St. John's College...was one of the most brilliant scenes...namely, the marshalling of the University boats in honour of the Royal visitors. This spectacle was much more gay and splendid than the ordinary annual procession of the boats which took place about three weeks before...The Prince and Princess of Wales [future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra], who were in King's grounds, where a marquee had been erected, watched this animated pageant from the banks, and when the boats returned and formed a sort of bridge across the river, the men tossing their oars and cheering lustily, their Royal Highnesses bowed repeatedly, evidently delighted with what they saw. The Prince and the distinguished Doctors of Law who accompanied him wore their scarlet robes. Three cheers for the Queen, and three more for the Prince and Princess of Wales, followed, and then the boats all paddled away in the order in which they had advanced'. A Regal Welcome - The Royal Visit to Cambridge, 1864
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken during a historic royal visit in June of that year, college boat clubs proudly march past Prince Albert Edward and Princess Alexandra (the future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) as they watch from the banks of the river. This grand procession was held in honor of their Royal Highnesses' presence at St. John's College, Cambridge.
The scene is alive with color and energy, as rowers toss their oars to cheers from the crowd. The Prince and Princess are visibly delighted by this animated pageant, repeatedly bowing to acknowledge the enthusiasm of those gathered around them. Notably, they wear scarlet robes alongside distinguished Doctors of Law who accompanied them.
The photograph captures a pivotal moment in British history when royalty connected with academia and tradition came together in celebration. This rare glimpse into Cambridge's past is made all the more special by its inclusion in "Illustrated London News" from 1864.
