The Royal Visit to India: the Madras Club Ball, from a sketch by an officer of the Serapis, 1876. The future King Edward VII...attended a ball given in his honour...The Prince [of Wales] wore full-dress Field Marshal's uniform... There were no native Princes...Nothing could exceed the taste or the brilliancy of the decorations, the ball-room itself being adorned with palm-trees placed between each of the arches opening into the colonnade...About 600 guests were present...The Prince...opened the ball with Mrs. Shaw Steward, the wife of Colonel Steward, the president of the club...his Royal Highness and Mrs. Steward had for their vis a vis an Austrian Prince and Lady Mary Grenville...[the] dancing went on most gaily, and it was nearly four o'clock [am] before the Prince left. He danced many times, and appeared to enjoy himself most thoroughly'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, sourced from the archives of Heritage Images, depicts a memorable moment from The Royal Visit to India in 1876. The future King Edward VII attended a grand ball given in his honor at the Madras Club in India. The Prince of Wales, dressed in full-dress Field Marshal uniform, graced the occasion with his regal presence. Notably absent were any native princes, reflecting the social norms of the time. The decorations for the ball were nothing short of extraordinary. Palm trees were artfully placed between each archway leading into the colonnade, adding to the exotic allure of the event. Approximately 600 guests were in attendance, eager to celebrate the royal visit. The Prince opened the ball with Mrs. Shaw Steward, the wife of Colonel Steward, the president of the club. For their vis-à-vis, they had an Austrian Prince and Lady Mary Grenville. The dancing went on most gaily, with the Prince participating enthusiastically. He danced numerous times and seemed to enjoy himself immensely, as evidenced by the radiant expressions on his face. This sketch, created by an officer of the Serapis, beautifully captures the elegance and excitement of the evening. The tasteful decorations, the grandeur of the attire, and the joyous atmosphere all contribute to a scene that transports us back in time to this historic event. A true testament to the opulence and splendor of the British Raj era in India.
