Ruins at Varna, after the recent fire, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Ruins at Varna, after the recent fire, 1854. Crimean War. Varna, which is one of the dirtiest labyrinths of modern times, was very nearly destroyed by the recent fire. As there was a fresh breeze blowing, the whole street of the Bazaar was soon in a blaze. Adjoining this street there are, unfortunately, three large magazines, filled with powder and shells, &c. and the danger of an explosion was imminent...large bodies of troops were engaged in pulling down houses to cut off the progress of the fire...The streets were strewed in every direction with Turkish linen, bales of tobacco, cigars in thousands, pickles, brandy and wine-cases, preserved meats, bottles of beer...money-chests; and, worst of all, large casks of spirits, with the contents of which many a man's canteen was speedily filled. The poor Turks fled away as fast as they could, with what goods they were able to save'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the aftermath of the devastating fire that ravaged the city of Varna during the Crimean War in 1854. The scene before us is one of destruction and chaos, with the remnants of once vibrant streets now reduced to smoldering ruins. The Bazaar, a labyrinthine marketplace known for its filth and clutter, was one of the hardest hit areas. The fire, fueled by the abundance of flammable materials such as Turkish linen, tobacco, and alcohol, quickly spread, putting nearby gunpowder magazines at risk of explosion. Desperate efforts were made by large bodies of troops to contain the fire and prevent further damage. The streets were a chaotic scene, with goods and valuables scattered in every direction. Bales of tobacco, cigars, pickles, brandy and wine-cases, preserved meats, and money-chests were all lost to the flames. Worst of all, large casks of spirits were breached, spilling their contents and filling the canteens of many a man. The poor Turks, who had lived and worked in these streets, were forced to flee as fast as they could, taking with them only what they could carry. The once bustling marketplace was now a scene of desolation, a stark reminder of the destructive power of war. This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the devastation wrought by the fire in Varna, a tragedy that would long be remembered in the annals of history.
