EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 16th century painting, created by the Novgorod school, depicts Saint George and scenes from his legendary life. Saint George, a revered figure in Christianity, is shown here as a valiant hero on horseback, slaying a mythical dragon. Dressed in rich, golden robes and armor, George rides toward the beast with determination and courage, his lance poised to strike. The dragon, a fearsome creature with scales of red and gold, rears up in defense, its fiery breath illuminated against the dark background. Surrounding Saint George are scenes from his life, including his encounter with the princess he saved from the dragon's clutches. She stands before him in a flowing, red dress, her hands raised in gratitude. In another scene, George is shown in a more peaceful setting, surrounded by a group of men, possibly knights, who pay homage to him. This painting, now housed in the Petit Palais in Paris, is a testament to the enduring power of the Saint George legend. The Novgorod school's masterful use of color and detail bring the story to life, transporting us back to the 16th century and the world of mythical beasts, heroic deeds, and the enduring power of faith.
