EDITORS COMMENTS
Saint Walpurgis, a patron saint of Germany and Bohemia, is depicted in this exquisite 16th century print by Leonhard Beck. Dated around 1516 or 1518, this black and white drawing showcases the saint in a blessing gesture, surrounded by various symbols of her missionary work and her association with ships and sailors. Born in the Anglo-Saxon region, Saint Walpurgis is believed to have been a missionary in Germany and Bohemia during the 8th and 9th centuries. Her coat of arms, featuring a ship and a staff topped with a cross, is prominently displayed at the bottom of the print. The saint is shown here in traditional Benedictine habit, with a white veil covering her head and a black robe and scapular. The print also includes several other figures, possibly representing various aspects of her legend or her role as a protector of travelers and sailors. One figure, possibly a male saint, is shown gesturing towards the saint, while another, a man, appears to be in deep prayer. The background is filled with intricate heraldic designs, reflecting the Hapsburg influence on German art during the Renaissance period. This beautiful and historic print is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Germany and Europe during the 16th century. It is currently on exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world.
