Sandbag Battery defended by the Guards - sketched on the morning of the Battle of Inkerman, 1854. Crimean War:..two 18-pounders which had been mounted on Sandbag battery were taken away, and the battery left without guns...The Russians...now assailed this redoubt...More than half of the Guards who entered action fell here; but around them lie heaps of the enemy. About this redoubt alone not less than 1500 Russian corpses have been counted. The killed were literally heaped one upon another, and most were shot through the head....After a rigid struggle against the superior number of the enemy, who was bringing up fresh battalions every instant, a welcome sight offered itself to our brave men. On the crest of the hill dashed the well-known red garments of the Zouaves...The Russians, wearied already at the deadly struggle they had sustained with our little band, drew back...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative sketch captures the intensity and chaos of the Battle of Inkerman during the Crimean War, as depicted on the morning of November 5, 1854. The image shows a sandbag battery defended by British Guards, with two 18-pounder cannons conspicuously absent. The Russians, sensing an opportunity, had seized the guns and assaulted the redoubt. The scene is one of carnage, with the bodies of fallen Guardsmen and Russians scattered around the battery. The caption from "Illustrated London News" reports that more than half of the Guards who entered the battle fell here, and estimates that around 1500 Russian corpses were counted around this redoubt alone. The struggle was fierce, with the Guards holding their ground against the Russian onslaught. But just as hope seemed lost, a welcome sight appeared on the crest of the hill: the distinctive red garments of the Zouaves. The Russians, already weary from the brutal fight, retreated in the face of the fresh reinforcements. This haunting image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifice and bravery of the soldiers who fought in the Crimean War.
