"Saying Grace" - from a picture by A. Neuhuys, in the exhibition of the New British Institution, 1876. Engraving of a painting. We have seldom seen a picture so truthful and touching in its homely pathos as this of a poor Dutch peasant interior, with its lowly occupants...We infer that this humble family circle consists of a grandmother and grandchildren only; perhaps the old dame is left bereaved of son or daughter with the offspring of the next generation to maintain unaided...how unfeignedly pious is the expression of that aged bowed head; and how sweetly reverential is the attitude of that simple, honest young girl! Not a whit less felicitous, appropriate, and true to nature is the contrast of the hungry little boy, too young yet to understand the import of "Saying Grace, " whose fingers are already nibbling at the frugal fare contained in the dish, and whose face is beaming with pleasant anticipation'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

Saying Grace,
EDITORS COMMENTS
a captivating painting by Dutch artist A. Neuhuys, showcases the simple yet profound moment of a humble Dutch family coming together for a meal. This engraving, displayed at the New British Institution in 1876, portrays a scene of raw emotion and heartfelt piety. The painting's composition invites the viewer into the intimate space of this lowly household, where the aged grandmother and her grandchildren gather around a modest table. The absence of a male figure suggests that the family has been left bereaved, with the grandchildren carrying on the legacy of their forebears. The grandmother, her head bowed in deep reverence, embodies the unwavering faith and devotion of her people. Her expression is one of unfeigned piety, her eyes closed as she offers a silent prayer before their meager meal. The young girl, with her simple and honest demeanor, mirrors her grandmother's devotion, her head tilted respectfully as she joins in the prayer. In stark contrast, the young boy, too young to fully comprehend the significance of the moment, eagerly anticipates the meal before him. His fingers, already nibbling at the frugal fare, betray his youthful exuberance. The juxtaposition of their contrasting attitudes adds a layer of depth and complexity to the scene, highlighting the unique dynamics of this humble family circle. This painting, with its truthful and touching portrayal of everyday life, is a testament to the power of faith, love, and the enduring bonds of family. The engraving, published in the Illustrated London News in 1876, captures the hearts of viewers with its raw emotion and homely pathos.
