Scene of the Accident to the "Pacific" Steam-Ship, on Leaving New York, 1850. The United States mail-steamer Pacific, arrived in the Mersey on Thursday, the 10th September, at 20 minutes before 12 o'clock, having left New York at half-past ten o'clock on the morning of Sunday, the 29th...being a day after the time she was advertised to sail. The delay was caused by the Pacific, coming in contact with a large shed erected on the quay, when leaving New York; and the result was that the shed was carried away, and one man killed, and fourteen or fifteen severely injured. The Pacific sustained some slight damage to her paddles by the collision...this splendid vessel has performed the voyage in ten days and twenty hours..."This beats the greatest passage of the Asia - the quickest ever made by a Cunard steamer-by thirteen hours...". From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the aftermath of an unfortunate accident involving the Pacific Steam-Ship as it departed from New York Harbor in 1850. The Pacific, a United States mail-steamer, was scheduled to leave New York on the 28th of that year but encountered an unforeseen delay. As the vessel was pulling away from the quay, it collided with a large shed, causing extensive damage. Tragically, one man lost his life in the incident, and fourteen to fifteen others were left severely injured. The Pacific sustained minor damage to its paddles as a result of the collision. Despite the setback, the Pacific went on to make maritime history by completing the transatlantic voyage in an impressive ten days and twenty hours. This achievement surpassed the previous record set by the Asia, a Cunard steamer, by an impressive thirteen hours. This photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the past, providing a poignant reminder of the risks and triumphs associated with early steamship travel. The image serves as a testament to the resilience of those who braved the open seas in pursuit of new opportunities and faster communication between continents.
