Scene from "Der Freischutz" (The Wolf's Glen), at the Royal Italian Opera, 1850. The overture was encored rapturously...the rush in the concluding passage was tremendous...the chords were struck like the firing-off of artillery. Of the principals, Mdlle. Vera and Herr Formes carried off the honours: the former has greatly improved by her Parisian experience...She was not so successful in the romance and air in the last act, not adhering strictly to her text; but, on the whole, she created quite a sensation by her debut. Formes [as Caspar]...gave the Drinking Song, and his aria finale of the first act, with marvellous fire. His death scene was remarkably fine. Mdme. Castellan sang the adagio of the grand scena beautifully; but she ruined many portions of her singing by introducing roulades quite out of keeping with Weber's music. EDITORS COMMENTS
Der Freischutz" (The Freeshooter), at the Royal Italian Opera in London during the 1850 season. The scene depicted is from the second act, known as "The Wolf's Glen," where the supernatural forces are unleashed. The orchestra, under the baton of an unseen conductor, plays with fervor and intensity, as evidenced by the raised bows of the string players and the focused expressions of the woodwind and brass sections. The audience, enraptured by the music, is seen clapping and cheering, with some even standing in appreciation. The overture had been performed earlier in the evening and was met with such enthusiasm that it was encored. Among the principal singers, Mdlle. Vera and Herr Formes received the most acclaim. Mdlle. Vera, having recently gained experience in Paris, had greatly improved and created a sensation with her debut. Her portrayal of the lead female character, Agathe, was not without flaw, however, as she deviated from the text in the romance and air of the final act. Herr Formes, as Caspar, delivered a powerful performance, particularly in the Drinking Song and his aria finale of the first act. His death scene was also notable for its emotional depth and impact. Mdme. Castellan sang the adagio of the grand scena with grace and beauty, but her performance was marred by the introduction of roulades that did not align with Weber's original composition." This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to the heart of a 19th-century opera house and allowing us to experience the excitement and passion of a live performance. The image serves as a testament to the enduring power of music and the artistry of the performers who brought Weber's masterpiece to life on the stage.
