EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Eton College's School Yard and Chapel in 1926. Founded by King Henry VI in 1440, this prestigious boarding independent school for boys is nestled in the charming town of Eton, Berkshire, near Windsor. The late Gothic or Perpendicular style of the chapel stands as a testament to its rich history and architectural grandeur. However, this historic site endured its share of hardships during World War II when a bomb shattered all but one window above the organ, leaving behind a poignant reminder of the ravages of war. Despite this tragedy, the resilience and spirit of Eton College prevailed. The School Yard itself dates back to the 1480s, adding another layer of historical significance to this remarkable institution. As you gaze upon this monochrome image from Christopher Hussey's book "Eton College" you can't help but be transported back to an era where education was revered and buildings were crafted with meticulous attention to detail. This photograph not only showcases the stunning architecture that defines Eton College but also serves as a visual representation of Britain's commitment to preserving its heritage. With its Grade I listed building status and reputation as one of England's most esteemed private schools, Eton College continues to shape young minds while honoring centuries-old traditions.
