Schooner and Yawl Match of the Royal Thames Yacht Club last Saturday: the Pantomine fouling the Mouse Light-Vessel, 1876. There was a very fine wind for the schooner and yawl matches of this club, sailed on Saturday last, from Gravesend round the Mouse Light-Ship and back...The Pantomime (151 tons, Mr. J. Starkey) made her first appearance in a match since lengthening 4 ft. by the stern. She did not appear to be improved as far as speed goes and, by some awkwardness, she sailed plump into the Mouse Light-Ship and got crippled... The Pantomime took more scope than the others for her gybe, and, in hauling up for the light-ship, sailed right into her stern, clearing away mizenmast, deckhouse, bulwarks, stanchion, and plank, but, oddly enough, only breaking her own bobstay. The Schooner and Yawl Match of the Royal Thames Yacht Club held last Saturday, 1876, was an exciting event graced by a robust wind. The race began from Gravesend, circled the Mouse Light-Ship, and returned up the River Thames. Among the participants was the schooner, Pantomime (151 tons), helmed by Mr. J. Starkey. The Pantomime, which had undergone a 4-foot extension at the stern, made its return to the race after an absence. However, the extension did not seem to enhance its speed. During the match, the Pantomime, in an unfortunate turn of events, sailed too close to the Mouse Light-Vessel. The ensuing collision resulted in significant damage to the Pantomime. Her mizenmast, deckhouse, bulwarks, stanchion, and plank were all damaged. Remarkably, the only thing the Pantomime broke was its own bobstay. Despite the damage, the Pantomime managed to continue the race, following the other vessels up the River Thames. The incident was captured beautifully in this photograph by H.E.
