The Scottish Highlands near Balmoral - view of Lochnagar, 1864. Creator: Unknown
The Scottish Highlands near Balmoral - view of Lochnagar, 1864. Landscape at...Loch-na-Gar, to which Byron has dedicated a few well-known verses. Here is a small black lake, which sleeps at the foot of a wide corrie or cleft near the summit of a mountain some miles to the south-east of Braemar. But in our View this lake, from which the mountain takes its name, is hidden by a lofty range of precipitous rocks, which run sheer down to the edge of the water, inclosing it with a perfect wall. The ground in front, strewn with white crags or tors, slopes upwards to the top of the mountain. The forest of Balloch-bowie, which lies just below this romantic solitude, is one of the best preserves of the red deer'. In 1980, the then Prince of Wales (later King Charles III) wrote a children's book called "The Old Man of Lochnagar". The story revolves around an old man who lives in a cave in the cliffs surrounding the corrie loch under the Lochnagar, a mountain which overlooks the royal estate at Balmoral in Scotland where the royal family traditionally spend much of their summer holidays. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the breathtaking beauty of The Scottish Highlands near Balmoral in 1864. The view of Lochnagar is truly mesmerizing, with its rugged mountains and serene black lake nestled at the foot of a wide corrie. The unknown creator has perfectly captured the essence of this remote and romantic landscape.
The image showcases a small black lake hidden by towering precipitous rocks that enclose it like a perfect wall. White crags and tors dotting the ground add to the dramatic scenery, leading up to the forest of Balloch-bowie below. This secluded spot is said to be one of the best preserves for red deer in the area.
Interestingly, in 1980, Prince Charles (now King Charles III) wrote a children's book titled "The Old Man of Lochnagar", inspired by this very location. The story revolves around an old man living in a cave near the corrie loch under Lochnagar mountain, overlooking the royal estate at Balmoral where his family traditionally spends their summer holidays.
Overall, this print is not just a visual delight but also holds historical significance as it captures a timeless moment in Scottish history and folklore.
