Sea Ranger - February, 1943, 1947. Princess Elizabeth (future Queen Elizabeth II) in uniform during the Second World War. On 26 February 1943, the sixteen-year-old princess was enrolled as a Sea Ranger on the SRS President III, having been a Girl Guide from the age of eleven. From 1920 onwards, Senior Guides were known as Rangers, and a separate unit, the Sea Rangers, was established for those with a strong naval interest. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a young and determined Princess Elizabeth, who would later become Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, during her enrollment as a Sea Ranger on the SRS President III in February 1943. At the age of sixteen, Elizabeth had already been a Girl Guide since the age of eleven, and with her strong naval interest, she joined the Sea Rangers, a separate unit established for Senior Guides with a naval affinity. During the Second World War, the Sea Rangers played an essential role in supporting the war effort. Princess Elizabeth's involvement in the Sea Rangers was a testament to her dedication and patriotism during this challenging time. In 1945, she was appointed as the Sea Ranger Commodore, further solidifying her commitment to the organization. The photograph shows Princess Elizabeth wearing her Sea Ranger uniform, including a jumper and sweater, which were popular fashion choices during the 1940s. The image is a poignant reminder of the young princess's transformation from a Girl Guide to a Sea Ranger, and her unwavering spirit during the Second World War. This photograph is from the book "Princess Elizabeth: The Illustrated Story of Twenty-one Years in the Life of the Heir Presumptive," written by Dermot Morrah and published by Odhams Press Limited in London in 1947. The photograph's creator remains unknown, adding to its historical intrigue.
