EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken during the Siege of Sebastopol in 1854, offers a breathtaking view of the Crimean War battlefield. The image captures the Black Sea in the background, with the allied and Russian positions distinctly visible. The three-decker warship, known as the "Twelve Apostles," anchors in the foreground, while the barracks, batteries, and fortifications of both sides dominate the landscape. The Russian Redan, Fort Constantine, Fort Nicholas, Admiralty Barracks, Fort Paul, Sunk Fort, Circular Tower, and batteries are all clearly depicted in this photograph. The intense fire of the Russians was relentlessly directed against the English batteries, as the allies labored with great spirit to make headway. Meanwhile, the French were experiencing their own setbacks, as another of their magazines was lost due to the explosion of a Russian shell. Simultaneously, the English were performing a similar role for the enemy by blowing up one of its magazines near the circular tower. The Lancaster one-gun battery, which had been attempting to strike the Twelve Apostles, failed to do so, as the powerful warship remained a formidable obstacle. The day was marked by significant losses for both sides. The most notable casualty for the English was Colonel Hood, who was tragically killed while leading the advance of Gordon's battery. This poignant photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the brutal realities of war and the sacrifices made by soldiers on both sides during the Crimean War.
