Second charge at the Battle of Dreux, French Religious Wars, 19 December 1562 (1570). Artist: Jacques Tortorel
Second charge at the Battle of Dreux, French Religious Wars, 19 December 1562 (1570). The outcome of the battle was indecisive, although notable for the fact that the commanders of both sides, Anne de Montmorency (1493-1567), Constable of France and leader of the Catholic forces and the Huguenot Louis, Prince de Conde (1530-1569) were both taken prisoner. Both sides suffered very heavy casualties. The French Religious Wars between the Catholics and the Protestant Huguenots took place between 1562 and 1598. The conflict ended when Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes, granting Protestants and Catholics equal rights

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intensity of the Second charge at the Battle of Dreux during the French Religious Wars on 19 December 1562. Created by artists Jacques Tortorel and Jean Perrissin, this engraving depicts a pivotal moment in history when both sides suffered heavy casualties. The battle itself was indecisive, but what makes it truly remarkable is that both commanders, Anne de Montmorency and Louis, Prince de Conde, were taken prisoner. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the violence and turmoil that plagued France during this period. The French Religious Wars lasted from 1562 to 1598 and pitted Catholics against Protestant Huguenots. The conflict only came to an end with Henry IV's issuance of the Edict of Nantes, which granted equal rights to Protestants and Catholics. In this image, we see soldiers charging forward with determination amidst a chaotic battlefield. It highlights not only their bravery but also the religious prejudice that fueled these conflicts. The print evokes a sense of urgency and tension as men fight for their beliefs. Anne de Montmorency stands at the center of attention while Louis, Prince de Conde commands his troops nearby. Their capture symbolizes how high-stakes this battle was for both sides involved. This print serves as a poignant reminder of France's turbulent past—a testament to its resilience in overcoming religious divisions—and offers us insight into one chapter in Europe's complex history.
