EDITORS COMMENTS
Selim I, also known as Selim the Grim or Selim the Cruel, was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1512 to 1520. This striking portrait of Selim I is a mezzotint hand-coloured with brush and watercolour on ivory wove, created by the English artist John Young in 1815. The image captures the Sultan in his regal attire, adorned with a green circular headdress, a long beard, and a bearded chin. He wears a green tunic with intricate gold embroidery and a red cloak draped over his shoulders. In his right hand, he holds a curved dagger, a symbol of his power and authority. The background is simple, with a circular frame surrounding the portrait. Selim I was known for his military conquests, expanding the Ottoman Empire's territory in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. He is also remembered for his patronage of the arts and literature. This portrait is a testament to the artistic and cultural heritage of the Ottoman Empire during the 16th century. The portrait is part of the Art Institute of Chicago's extensive collection of prints and drawings. It is a valuable addition to the institute's collection, showcasing the rich history and artistic traditions of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. The intricate details of the portrait and the vibrant colours bring the image to life, transporting us back in time to the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Selim I.
