Shipwreck of "The Northern Belle": the Crew of "The Mary White", in their Life-boat, drawn through Broadstairs, 1857. Lifeboatmen saved the lives of the crew of a US ship that was wrecked off the coast of Kent....the Mary White was dragged upon her truck by three horses into Broadstairs. In the boat sat her gallant crew. Tied to an American oar was the American standard which was so recently hoisted as a signal of distress. The tattered flag fluttered over the broken bows of the Mary White. It was thus that the boat passed through the streets of Broadstairs, amidst the joyous shouts of the inhabitants of the town'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of triumph and relief as the crew of the lifeboat "The Mary White" return to shore with the survivors of the wrecked US ship, "The Northern Belle." The scene unfolds in Broadstairs, Kent, England, in 1857. The lifeboat, pulled by three horses, makes its way through the town's streets, the American flag tied to an oar serving as a testament to the harrowing ordeal that had just taken place. The tattered flag, which had been hoisted as a distress signal, now flutters proudly over the broken bow of the Mary White. The crew, dressed in their heavy apparel and topped with hats, are shown seated in the boat, some gesturing towards the cheering crowd that lines the streets. The women in the crowd raise their hats in a show of respect and admiration for the brave lifeboatmen who had risked their lives to save the crew of the Northern Belle. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News, captures the spirit of community and courage that defined the Victorian era.
