Shiva's Family on the March (image 6 of 6), c1800
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an exquisite 19th century opaque watercolor and gold on paper painting from the Chamba region of Himachal Pradesh, India. The artwork showcases a dynamic and captivating scene of the Hindu deity Shiva, riding on his vehicle, Nandi the bull, while his family follows behind. Shiva, the destroyer and creator in the Hindu trinity, is depicted with a third eye, serene expression, and matted locks. He rides confidently on Nandi, who gazes steadfastly forward. Shiva's consort Parvati, also known as Shakti, is seated on the back of a regal tiger, her hands in prayer position. Their sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya, ride on a rat and a peacock, respectively. The family is on a journey, descending from the mountainside, possibly en route to Mount Kailash, Shiva's abode. The painting's vibrant colors and intricate gold details bring the scene to life, transporting the viewer to the rich and diverse cultural heritage of India. Ganesha, the elephant-headed god, is depicted riding on a rat, his favorite vahana (vehicle). He holds a modak (sweet rice dumpling) in his right hand, a symbol of wisdom and knowledge. Kartikeya, also known as Murugan or Skanda, is depicted riding on a peacock, his favorite vahana, signifying his victory over demons and his role as the god of war. This painting is a testament to the rich artistic traditions of India and Southeast Asia, showcasing the intricate details and symbolism found in Hindu art. The artwork is now part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's collection and serves as a reminder of the diverse and vibrant artistic heritage of the Asian continent.
