The Siamese Ambassadors - from photographs by Mayall, 1857. Creator: Smyth
The Siamese Ambassadors - from photographs by Mayall, 1857. The three Ambassadors were not attired in that gorgeous costume to which Orientals have accustomed us; and their lower limbs (which at home go unscathed) were here cased in a European fashion, which contrasted laughably with their upper and more flowing garb. The chief Ambassador wore a hat with the broadest of brims, relieved by gold embroidery. The two other Ambassadors wore helmet-shaped caps. Phya Mantri Suriywanse and Chau Mun Sarbbedh Bhacty are the representatives of the First or Major King of Siam. Cha-mun Mondir Bidacks is the representative of the Second King of Siam'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The Siamese Ambassadors - from photographs by Mayall, 1857,' offers a glimpse into the diplomatic world of 19th century Siam (now Thailand). The image, published in the 'Illustrated London News,' features three Siamese ambassadors, Phya Mantri Suriywanse, Chau Mun Sarbbedh Bhacty, and Cha-mun Mondir Bidacks, who were representing their respective kings during a visit to Britain. Contrary to the stereotypical Oriental attire that Europeans were accustomed to, these ambassadors were dressed in a mix of European and traditional Siamese clothing. Their lower limbs were covered in European-style trousers, while their upper bodies were adorned in flowing garments. The chief ambassador wore a hat with an oversized brim, embellished with gold embroidery, while the other two wore helmet-shaped caps. The ambassadors' clothing, a blend of cultures, highlights the diplomatic exchange between the two nations. The fabric, rich in color and texture, is a testament to the intricate needlework and craftsmanship that went into creating these garments. The contrast between the European-style lower garments and the traditional upper attire adds a layer of intrigue and humor, making this photograph a fascinating glimpse into the past. The photograph was taken by John Jabez Edwin Mayall, a renowned British photographer known for his portraits and architectural photography. This full-length image, captured in black and white, is a valuable historical document that provides insight into the diplomatic relations between Britain and Siam during the 19th century.
