EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century print depicts Raja Sidh Sen of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, India, dressed as the Hindu deity Shiva. The image, created around 1730, showcases the Maharaja in a full-length portrait, standing before a backdrop of intricate floral designs. Shiva is recognized by the third eye on his forehead and the serene expression on his face. He is adorned with a crown, necklaces, and a long matted lock of hair. The deity's iconic attributes, including the crescent moon and the trident, are also present. Two attendants, one holding a peacock feather fan and the other a bull, Shiva's vahana, are shown in attendance. The Maharaja's regal attire is further embellished with gold, silver, and opaque watercolor. The intricate details of the artwork are accentuated by the use of ink on paper. The print is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Hindoostan (India) during the 18th century. The image reflects the deep-rooted religious beliefs and the influence of Hinduism on the royalty of the time. The use of vibrant colors, intricate designs, and the attention to detail are characteristic of the artistic styles prevalent during this era. This rare and mystical artwork, now housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), offers a glimpse into the past, providing valuable insights into the culture, traditions, and artistic expressions of South East Asia during the 1700s.
