Silver-Gilt Clock - Renaissance, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Silver-Gilt Clock - Renaissance, 1850. Item from an exhibition of ancient and mediaeval art at the Society of Arts in London. The curious little silver-gilt Clock...is another specimen ef the style of the renaissance, belonging to Mr. Baring Wall, M.P. It is surmounted by a figure of Cupid; and, as there is no accounting for the vagaries of the artists of this period we are not particularly called upon to animadvert on the length of the arrow with which the mischievous little god is pointing to the hours - perhaps as a hint to all tardy lovers'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite Silver-Gilt Clock, a relic of the Renaissance era, dates back to 1850 and is an intriguing addition to the exhibition of ancient and mediaeval art at the Society of Arts in London. The clock, which is in the possession of Mr. Baring Wall, M.P., showcases the ornate artistic style of the period with its silver-gilt surface and intricate engravings. Atop the clock stands a figure of Cupid, the Roman god of love. The curious positioning of Cupid's arrow, pointed towards the hours, adds an element of whimsy and allegory to the timepiece. The artists of the Renaissance period were known for their allegorical figures, and this cherubic Cupid is no exception. The clock's surface is adorned with putti, or angelic figures, and amorini, or little love gods, adding to the overall theme of love and the passage of time. The clock's ornate design and allegorical figures reflect the artistic school of the period, which valued intricacy and beauty above all else. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, captures the clock in all its glory, preserving its intricate details for future generations to appreciate. The clock's silver gilt surface glints in the light, and the putti and cherubs seem to come alive in this snapshot of history. This Silver-Gilt Clock is a testament to the artistic prowess of the Renaissance era and a reminder of the beauty and intrigue that can be found in the smallest of objects.
