EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the distinguished figure of Sir Henry Cole, KCB, a renowned British designer, civil servant, and writer. Captured in 1877 by Lock & Whitfield, this portrait immortalizes a man who played an instrumental role in shaping British history. Sir Henry Cole's accomplishments are vast and far-reaching. He assisted Rowland Hill in designing the world's first adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black, revolutionizing communication as we know it. In addition to his postal innovations, he published the very first Christmas card in 1843—a tradition that has since become synonymous with holiday celebrations worldwide. His contributions extended beyond design and literature. Sir Henry Cole was also involved in planning the prestigious Great Exhibition of 1851 under Prince Albert's guidance. Furthermore, he served as the founding Director of what is now known as the Victoria and Albert Museum—an institution dedicated to preserving art and design for future generations. In this powerful image captured by Lock & Whitfield from their collection "Men of Mark". Sir Henry Cole exudes intelligence and determination. His piercing gaze reflects a man deeply committed to his work while embodying qualities that defined Victorian-era England—innovation, creativity, and devotion to progress. As we admire this remarkable photograph today at The Print Collector museum of ornamental art or any other exhibition where it may be displayed (not for commercial use), we pay tribute to an extraordinary individual whose legacy continues to shape our lives centuries later.
