EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1914, Sir Wilfred Grenfell M.D. and his wife Anne Elizabeth Caldwell MacClanahan are seen in a group setting at the residence of C.H. Butler. Sir Wilfred Grenfell, a British missionary, is renowned for his humanitarian work in Labrador, Canada. He is best known for founding the International Grenfell Association and surviving being marooned on an ice-pan where he had to rely on eating three of his huskies to stay alive. Anne Elizabeth Caldwell MacClanahan, who is standing next to her husband, was a significant support to her husband's missionary work. The Grenfells' dedication to serving the people of Labrador was unwavering, and they spent their lives improving the lives of the local communities through medical care, education, and social services. Sir Wilfred Grenfell's career as a physician and missionary spanned several decades, and he was a pioneer in bringing modern medical care to the remote areas of Labrador. His work was instrumental in reducing the mortality rate among the indigenous population and improving their overall health and well-being. The Grenfells' commitment to their work was inspiring, and their legacy continues to live on through the International Grenfell Association, which continues to provide essential services to the people of Labrador and the coastal communities of northern Newfoundland. This photograph, taken by the renowned American photography studio Harris & Ewing, captures a moment in time when two remarkable individuals were dedicated to making a difference in the world, one community at a time.
