Sisters of Charity (St. Benoit), in the new Hospital, at Pera, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Sisters of Charity (St. Benoit), in the new Hospital, at Pera, 1854. French nuns nursing soldiers during the Crimean War, at Istanbul. In the hospital at Pera, there are four of the Sisters, who as soon as they heard that cholera had set in, offered their services...The hospital in which the Sisters are thus engaged is a building erected near the Champ des Morts...2000 men may be received in the magnificent wards...The corridors are so large, and so well lighted, that comfortable wards could be made of them, if required, and then 2000 more might be accommodated...The Sisters not only go, at any time, day or night, miles off to attend the sick on the Turkish side, they also attend the prisons, &c, carrying to the prisoners money and clothes'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1854, depicts Sisters of Charity (St. Benoit) providing care and compassion to wounded soldiers during the Crimean War at the new hospital in Pera, Istanbul. The Sisters, dressed in their traditional habits and headdresses, are seen attending to the injured men with dedication and kindness. The hospital, which was erected near the Champ des Morts, had the capacity to accommodate 2000 men in its magnificent wards. The corridors were spacious and well-lit, allowing for additional wards to be created if needed, enabling the hospital to accommodate even more patients. The Sisters of Charity were renowned for their philanthropic work, and during this time of crisis, they selflessly offered their services as soon as they heard that cholera had broken out. They not only attended to the sick in the hospital but also went miles off to nurse the Turkish side and even visited prisons, bringing money and clothes to the prisoners. This evocative image, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the dedication and compassion of the Sisters of Charity during a time of war and disease. The photograph, reminiscent of the 19th century, captures the essence of a bygone era, highlighting the importance of nursing and the role of religious institutions in providing care and comfort to those in need.
