Sketches in Cashmere - Ruins of Ancient Temple, near Islambad, 1857. Creator: Unknown
Sketches in Cashmere - Ruins of Ancient Temple, near Islambad, [modern Pakistan], 1857. Possibly a view of the Martand Sun Temple, an 8th-century Hindu temple....a picturesque group of ruins situated at the foot of the hills three miles east of the town of Islambad, on the north side of the Behut, or Jhelum...The ruins are the remains of a temple, said to be built 500 B.C, They consist of two large rooms, each about thirty feet long, surrounded by a quadrangular colonnade, about 100 yards square. The granite blocks of which the temple is built are of immense size; every particle has once been elaborately carved; but, notwithstanding the depth of the sculpture and hardness of the material, almost all the figures and hieroglyphics are effaced'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white wood engraving, titled 'Sketches in Cashmere - Ruins of Ancient Temple, near Islambad,' dates back to 1857. The image, possibly depicting the Martand Sun Temple, an 8th-century Hindu temple located three miles east of Islambad, modern-day Pakistan, presents a picturesque group of ruins nestled at the foot of the hills. The temple, believed to have been constructed around 500 BC, consists of two large rooms, each approximately thirty feet long, encircled by a quadrangular colonnade measuring about 100 yards square. The granite blocks used to build the temple are of immense size and intricately carved, with every particle once displaying elaborate sculptures and hieroglyphics. Regrettably, the passage of time and the elements have caused most of the figures and inscriptions to fade away, leaving only a shadow of their former glory. This evocative image was published in the esteemed British newspaper, 'Illustrated London News,' providing a glimpse into the rich archaeological and cultural heritage of India during the 19th century. The ruins, a significant tourist attraction for travelers and archaeology enthusiasts, continue to captivate the imagination and inspire curiosity about the ancient civilizations that once thrived in this region.
