Sketches in India - Brahmin Students, 1858. Creator: Unknown
Sketches in India - Brahmin Students, 1858. We are indebted to the "Photographic Album" of Bombay for the characteristic Sketch of two Brahmin Students of English Literature...These two youths are members of the higher class of natives devoted to secular duties in the Southern Maratta country and the Carnatic, and are not of the class who devote themselves to the study of the Vedas, or the devotees of Shastras, or the scrubbers or anointers of the idols of stone and metal. Their form and figure, which do not differ much from the Western mould, are indicative of the Aryan race, to which the Brahmin belongs. They have come to the seat of the Presidency to pursue their study of the English language'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled "Sketches in India - Brahmin Students, 1858," showcases two young Brahmin scholars engrossed in their studies in British-ruled India. The image, which originated from the "Photographic Album" of Bombay, offers a unique glimpse into the lives of these higher-class natives, who were dedicated to secular pursuits in the Southern Maratta country and the Carnatic region, rather than the traditional roles of studying the Vedas or serving as idol priests. The two youths, whose forms and figures are reminiscent of the Aryan race, are shown dressed in typical attire of the time. They are barefoot, wearing simple white robes and headdresses, indicative of their Indian heritage. However, their Western-style headgear and focus on English literature suggest their integration into the British educational system. The photograph, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1858, provides a fascinating insight into the intersection of Indian and Western cultures during the colonial era. It challenges stereotypes and offers a nuanced perspective on the diverse population of India, highlighting the complexities of the time. The image, with its intricate details, captures the essence of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the lives of these young men and their dedication to learning. The photograph serves as a reminder of the rich cultural history of India and the complexities of its relationship with the British during the 19th century.
