Sketches from Naples - Castle of Ischia, 1857. Creator: Edmund Evans
Sketches from Naples - Castle of Ischia, 1857. On the north and west the island slopes gradually down to the sea, and terminates in a beach; while on the south and east it plunges into the sea in abrupt and lofty precipices...The advanced position of Ischia, commanding the western entrance to the Bay of Naples, has made it an important point d'appui for a blockading force; hence it has been the scene of many a fierce and sanguinary struggle during the dynastic wars and revolutions of the kingdom. The baths...have enjoyed high reputation from the earliest period of the Greek colonisation of the island. No spot of the same extent in the known world contains such a number of hot mineral waters; and so rich is the island in springs, that many valuable waters, which would make the fortune of any town in continental Europe, are here allowed to run waste, or are used for domestic purposes'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Sketches from Naples - Castle of Ischia," was created by the renowned English photographer Edmund Evans in 1857. The photograph showcases the picturesque Castle of Ischia, an island located in the western part of the Bay of Naples, Italy. The island's north and west sides gently slope down to the sea, forming a beach, while the south and east sides plunge into the sea in dramatic, lofty cliffs. The strategic position of Ischia, guarding the western entrance to the Bay of Naples, has made it a significant point of defense throughout history. Witness to many fierce and sanguinary struggles during the dynastic wars and revolutions of the Kingdom, the castle has stood the test of time. Beyond its military significance, Ischia is renowned for its therapeutic baths. With a wealth of hot mineral waters, the island boasts an unprecedented number of springs. The reputation of these baths dates back to the earliest period of Greek colonization, making Ischia a sought-after destination for those seeking healing and relaxation. The richness of Ischia in springs is so abundant that many valuable waters, which would make the fortune of any town in continental Europe, are here allowed to run waste or used for domestic purposes. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history and allure of Ischia, inviting us to explore its enchanting landscapes and the stories they hold.
