Sketches from Naples - the Island of Nisida, 1857. Creator: Unknown
Sketches from Naples - the Island of Nisida, [Italy] 1857. On this site, in more modem times, has been erected an "Ergastolo" - a building which, by law, must be upon an island, and to which are confined those who are condemned to imprisonment for life. This place is reserved in an especial manner for priests, who, according to a convention concluded between Gregory XVI. and the Government of the Two Sicilies in 1834, must be confined in separate prisons...That large whitewashed building on the top strikes even the stranger as a suspicious-looking spot, a place of unknown suffering and woe...How sad and silent the place looks!'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

Sketches from Naples - the Island of Nisida, 1857
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an evocative black and white wood engraving that captures the haunting beauty and intrigue of the Italian island of Nisida, located in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Naples, Campania, Italy. The image, created in 1857 by an unknown artist, was originally published in the "Illustrated London News," a prominent British newspaper of the time. The composition of the print showcases the island's rugged coastline, with its rocky shores, towering cliffs, and small harbor dotted with boats. In the distance, a lighthouse stands guard over the choppy waters, its beacon piercing the gloom. The scene is serene, yet there is an undeniable sense of unease that permeates the image. The large, whitewashed building perched atop the island's highest point is particularly striking. At the time, this structure served as an "Ergastolo," a penitentiary reserved for priests who were sentenced to life imprisonment under a convention between Pope Gregory XVI and the Two Sicilies government in 1834. The building's ominous presence casts a shadow over the island, hinting at the suffering and woe that lie within. The print's caption adds to the intrigue, describing the Ergastolo as a "suspicious-looking spot" and a "place of unknown suffering and woe." The author's words paint a vivid picture of isolation and despair, further emphasizing the island's mysterious allure. Despite the somber subject matter, the print's composition is masterful, with intricate details and a sense of depth that draw the viewer in. The black and white medium perfectly captures the mood and atmosphere of the scene, making "Sketches from Naples - the Island of Nisida, 1857" a timeless work of art that continues to captivate and intrigue viewers over a century and a half after its creation.
