Smoke streaming from the Crater of Erebus, c1908, (1909)

Smoke streaming from the Crater of Erebus, c1908, (1909). Erebus is the second-highest volcano in Antarctica and the southernmost active volcano on Earth. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing sight of smoke streaming from the Crater of Erebus, taken around 1908 during Ernest Shackleton's second expedition to Antarctica. Mount Erebus, standing as the southernmost active volcano on Earth and the second-highest in Antarctica, served as a challenging conquest for Shackleton and his team. During this groundbreaking expedition, Shackleton and three companions achieved an extraordinary feat by reaching Farthest South latitude at 88° S. Their remarkable advancement brought them within a mere 97 geographical miles from the elusive South Pole, marking it as the largest progress ever made towards that goal in exploration history. In addition to their record-breaking journey, members of Shackleton's team also managed to conquer Mount Erebus itself. This mountainous giant is known for its constant volcanic activity, which can be seen in this image through the billowing smoke emanating from its crater. Ernest Shackleton's contributions to Antarctic exploration were so significant that he was knighted by King Edward VII for his achievements. Unfortunately, his life was cut short during his third and final oceanographic and sub-Antarctic expedition when he passed away at just 47 years old. This illustration comes from "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I written by E. H. Shackleton himself in 1909. It serves as a testament to both his incredible adventures and enduring legacy in polar exploration.
