Sol, the Roman god of the Sun, is depicted in this exquisite engraving by Hendrik Goltzius, created in the 1590s. The image is part of Goltzius's set of the Antique Gods, and this particular print is identified as plate 5. Sol is shown as a powerful and muscular man, standing confidently with one foot forward and a bow and arrow in hand. The god is nude, his body adorned only with a belt and a feathered cap. He is surrounded by various animals and mythical creatures, including a serpent coiled at his feet. The influence of Italian Renaissance art is evident in the composition and the detailed rendering of the figures. The black and white contrast adds a dramatic effect, enhancing the sense of power and strength. The print was produced during the Dutch Renaissance, a period of great artistic and intellectual flourishing in the Netherlands.
