EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-carved wooden print depicts the Four Sons of Horus, a group of ancient Egyptian deities believed to protect the internal organs of the deceased during the afterlife. The Four Sons of Horus, consisting of Imsety, Duamutef, Hapi, and Qebehsenuef, each represented an organ and were often depicted as human-animal hybrids. Imsety, represented by the jackal, protected the stomach, Duamutef, symbolized by a mummified man with the head of a jackal, protected the stomach and intestines, Hapi, represented by a man with the head of a baboon, protected the liver, and Qebehsenuef, depicted as a man with the head of a falcon, protected the lungs. This exquisite piece dates back to the 26th Dynasty of ancient Egypt, around the 6th or 7th century BC. The intricate carving showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of the time, with each figure displayed in a standing position, their hands placed in front of their chests in a protective gesture. The Four Sons of Horus were an essential part of the ancient Egyptian religious belief system, and their presence in tombs and burial sites was believed to ensure the deceased's protection and preservation in the afterlife. This beautiful piece is now part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), showcasing the rich heritage and artistic traditions of ancient Egypt. The close-up studio shot highlights the intricate details of the carving, allowing viewers to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that went into creating this ancient masterpiece.
