The Sortie Made by the Garrison of Gibraltar, 27 November 1781 (c1857). Spanish and French forces besieged Gibraltar from 1779 until 1783. The British garrison was commanded by General Sir George Eliott (1717-1790) was knighted, who was knighted for his successful defence of the Rock. He was created Baron Heathfield in 1787. The sortie by the British on 27 November 1781 was a surprise attack that succeeded in routing a Franco-Spanish force preparing for an assault on the garrison.
