EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 15th century painting by Vittore Crivelli, titled "St Louis of France, 1481-1502," depicts the bishop and Franciscan friar, Louis of Anjou, also known as King Louis XI of France. The painting, created in the late 15th or early 16th century, showcases the bishop in a full-length portrait, dressed in his ecclesiastical robes and holding both a bishop's crozier and a pastoral staff. The crozier, a symbol of his bishopric, is adorned with intricate gold and jewels, while the pastoral staff, a shepherd's crook, represents his role as a spiritual shepherd. Louis XI of France, born in 1423 in the Low Countries, was a significant figure in French and European history. He served as bishop of Toulouse and later became the King of France in 1461. The painting captures the essence of the devotion and piety of the time, with the bishop's hands folded in prayer, his eyes closed, and a book resting on the ground at his feet. The painting is a beautiful example of the Gothic style, with its rich colors, intricate details, and focus on the human form. It is currently on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, as part of their European art collection. This artwork is a testament to the cultural and historical significance of the Christian faith and the role of religious figures in European society during the late Middle Ages.
