St. Pauls Dome Brooding Over The Roof-Tops of Amen Court, c1935. Creator: Donald McLeish
St. Pauls Dome Brooding Over The Roof-Tops of Amen Court, c1935. The garden at Amen Corner, 17th-century houses built for the clergymen of St Pauls Cathedral in London. The buildings were so named because on the feastday of Corpus Christi, monks would recite the Lords Prayer in a procession to the Cathedral, reaching the final amen as they turned the corner in Ave Maria Lane. From " Wonderful London, Volume 1", edited by Arthur St John Adcock. [The Fleetway House, London, c1935]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "St. Paul's Dome Brooding Over The Roof-Tops of Amen Court" transports us back to the enchanting streets of London in the 1930s. Created by Donald McLeish, it beautifully captures the serene atmosphere of Amen Corner, a historic location that once housed clergymen from St. Paul's Cathedral. The image showcases a picturesque garden at Amen Corner, surrounded by 17th-century houses built for these religious figures. Aptly named after an ancient tradition, where monks recited the Lords Prayer during a procession to St. Paul's Cathedral on Corpus Christi feast day, reaching their final amen as they turned the corner in Ave Maria Lane. As we gaze upon this scene frozen in time, our eyes are drawn towards the magnificent St. Paul's Dome looming majestically over the rooftops of Amen Court. Its presence evokes a sense of grandeur and spirituality that has stood strong throughout centuries. The carefully manicured lawn and lush greenery provide a tranquil backdrop to this architectural marvel. Trees gracefully frame the composition while adding depth and texture to the overall landscape. Donald McLeish skillfully captures both the external beauty of these buildings and their spiritual significance within British history. This monochrome masterpiece is not only an ode to London's rich heritage but also serves as a reminder of our connection with religion and its influence on society. Displayed here as part of Arthur St John Adcock's publication "Wonderful London" this print invites us into an era long gone but forever preserved through artistry and photography.
