EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken between 1880 and 1897 by William H. Jackson, captures the impressive facade of the State, War, and Navy Building in Washington, D.C. during the nineteenth century. Located on 17th Street, the building served as the headquarters for the Departments of State, War, and the Navy, making it a significant landmark in the nation's capital. The Second Empire Style architecture, influenced by Napoleon III's architecture in France, is evident in the building's Mansard roof and ornate detailing. The large glass windows allow natural light to flood the interior, while the intricate ironwork and brickwork add to the building's grandeur. The thoroughfare in front of the building, which is now known as Constitution Avenue, is bustling with activity, as horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians make their way along the road. The building's imposing presence is a testament to the power and importance of the United States government during this period. This photograph, which measures 8 x 10 inches, is a dry plate negative, and was taken during the era of photography. It is now part of the collections of the Library of Congress, a repository of the nation's historical treasures, and a reminder of the rich heritage and history of the United States.
