Statue of Mr Strutt, in the Arboretum, at Derby, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Statue of Mr Strutt, in the Arboretum, at Derby, 1854. Joseph Strutt [a cotton mill owner]...saw with sorrow that no open heath or common-land existed in the neighbourhood of his native town, and resolved to supply the deficiency, and give the inhabitants of their large and increasing town the opportunity of enjoying with their families exercise and recreation in the fresh air, in public walks and grounds devoted to that purpose. To accomplish his beneficent idea, he purchased nearly twelve acres of land...and engaged the services of the late J. C. Loudon, the distinguished landscape gardener, to lay out the grounds. No expense was spared....To the credit of the workingiclasses, for whose advantage it was intended, few, if any, depredations have been committed during the fourteen years it has been a place of public resort'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the Statue of Joseph Strutt, located in the Arboretum of Derby, England, in 1854. Joseph Strutt, a successful cotton mill owner, is immortalized in this full-length sculpture, which stands as a testament to his philanthropic endeavors. Strutt lamented the lack of open spaces in his hometown for the enjoyment of its growing population, and resolved to rectify this deficiency. He purchased nearly twelve acres of land and engaged the renowned landscape gardener, J. C. Loudon, to design the grounds. No expense was spared in creating this public park, which provided the inhabitants of Derby with much-needed opportunities for exercise and recreation in the fresh air. The Arboretum, as it came to be known, opened in 1840, and to the credit of the working classes, it remained largely undamaged during its first fourteen years of existence. This print, published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, captures the essence of Strutt's benevolent vision and the beauty of the Arboretum, which continues to be a cherished part of Derby's heritage to this day.
