Stockport Volunteer Armoury and Drillground, 1862. Building...just completed for the fourth battalion of the Cheshire Rifle Volunteers...The buildings consist of three distinct departments: The armoury buildings, in which are contained, on the ground floor, the armoury, of size sufficient for 1000 stand of arms, and the Adjutant's private room and office; on the first floor a room for the officers and another for the men, and on the second floor a room for band practice...from the upper stage, in consequence of the elevated situation of the ground, will be commanded an extensive prospect on all sides. In the basement of the tower will be a cellar for heating apparatus, coal, &c...Partly from the requirements of the plan, and partly for the sake of effect, this building is arranged in the form, of a square tower, with high pyramidal roof...The roofs of all the buildings are covered with. Staffordshire tiles. Adjoining the Sergeant-Major's residence is the main, and indeed the only, entrance to the drillground. The Marquis of Westminster, the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, is one of the shareholders, and has taken great interest in the erection'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1862, showcases the newly completed Stockport Volunteer Armoury and Drillground in Cheshire, England. The armoury and drillground were built for the fourth battalion of the Cheshire Rifle Volunteers, providing essential facilities for the training and preparation of local militia during a time of heightened military tension. The armoury buildings consist of three distinct departments. The ground floor houses the armory itself, capable of accommodating 1,000 stands of arms, as well as the Adjutant's private room and office. The first floor includes a room for officers and another for the men, while the second floor is used for band practice. The upper stage offers a commanding view of the surrounding area due to the elevated position of the ground. The basement of the tower contains a cellar for heating apparatus and other necessities. The building's unique design, in the form of a square tower with a high pyramidal roof, is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The roofs of all the buildings are covered with Staffordshire tiles, adding to their charm. Adjoining the Sergeant-Major's residence is the main entrance to the drillground. The Marquis of Westminster, the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, played a significant role in the erection of this important military installation and took great interest in its construction. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the pride and dedication of the community in maintaining their local defense forces.
