EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1876, captures the enchanting moment of a strolling minstrel from the Dher caste in Madras, India, as he skillfully plays the tingadee. The tingadee, a lesser-known musical instrument, is composed of three gourds, each with a rod bearing a set of keys across their mouths, and two thin wires stretched over the keys. The minstrel plays the instrument by striking the wires lightly with the forefinger and little finger of his right hand, producing a soft and pleasant tone. The minstrel is dressed in traditional attire, wearing a dhoti wrapped around his waist and a lunghi draped over his shoulders. His head is adorned with a turban, adding to his regal appearance. The photograph, which is a full-length, engraved image, was published in the prestigious "Illustrated London News" and we are grateful to Captain Frank James of the Bombay Staff Corps for providing it. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of India during the 19th century, showcasing the country's unique musical traditions and the itinerant musicians who played a significant role in preserving them. The image, with its intricate details, is a testament to the artistry of the era and serves as a reminder of the enduring beauty of traditional music and dress.
