EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the Sun God Surya gracefully riding his chariot, drawn from an intricately painted mural discovered inside the niche of the Bamiyan Buddha in Afghanistan. The mural, a replica of an original 7th century artwork from the Kushan Empire, was created by the renowned French artist Jean Carl (1900-1941) during his expedition to Afghanistan in 1935. The Bamiyan Buddhas, two monumental statues of Buddha carved into the cliffs of the Bamiyan Valley, were renowned for their grandeur and cultural significance in Buddhism. However, they were tragically destroyed in 2001. The painted murals, like the one depicted here, were an essential part of the Buddhist shrines and were believed to symbolize various allegories and literary themes. In this painting, Surya, the deity of the sun, is shown riding his chariot, pulled by seven horses, each representing the seven days of the week. The Sun God is often depicted as an allegory of life and vitality, and his chariot is believed to traverse the sky each day, bringing light and warmth to the world. This gouache on paper artwork by Jean Carl is now part of the esteemed collection of the Musée Guimet in Paris, a museum dedicated to the arts of Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. The painting offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Bamiyan region and the mythological beliefs of the ancient civilizations that once thrived there.
