EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the moment of surrender at the Tower of Prasto during the Crimean War in 1854. The scene unfolds on a rocky plateau, with two companies of French infantry, their colors and two field-pieces, occupying the left side. A third field-piece is stationed in the gateway. The garrison, consisting of Russian soldiers, is assembled in front of the tower. They are dressed in helmets, long grey coats, black cross belts, and carry long, bright-barreled muskets. At the center of the image, the French Commandant is in the process of receiving the sword of the Russian Colonel, signifying the surrender of the Tower of Prasto. This historic fortification, one of three outworks to the grand fortress of Bomarsund on the island of the same name, stood on the north-east angle of the island. The Tower of Prasto was a formidable structure, mounting twenty guns. The morning of September 16, 1854, saw the tower subjected to a three-hour bombardment by a squadron of English and French steamers, under Rear-Admiral Plumridge, at a long range. The relentless attack eventually led to the surrender of the tower, as depicted in this evocative photograph.
