EDITORS COMMENTS
Rene Boyvin's engraving, Susanna and the Elders, depicts a biblical scene from the Book of Daniel, believed to have been created between the 16th and 17th centuries. The Old Testament narrative tells the story of Susanna, a beautiful and virtuous wife, who is lured into the garden by two elders under the pretext of seeking her help. Once there, they attempt to harass and seduce her, but she refuses their advances and threatens to expose their deceit. In retaliation, the elders falsely accuse Susanna of adultery. Boyvin's rendition captures the moment of the elders' attempt to harass Susanna, with the elderly men leering at her from either side, their lecherous intentions clear in their expressions. The scene is set in a rustic, idyllic garden, with Susanna's nakedness and vulnerability contrasted against the natural beauty of her surroundings. The engraving is a powerful depiction of the fear and violation Susanna experiences, and is a testament to the enduring themes of power, sexuality, and morality in religious art of the Baroque era. This historic work is now part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and serves as a reminder of the complex and often controversial ways in which biblical stories were depicted during this period.
