Sweetmeat, the winner of the Doncaster Plate, 1845. Creator: Unknown

Sweetmeat, the winner of the Doncaster Plate, 1845. Jockey George Whitehouse on racehorse Sweetmeat. The winner of the Piece of Plate at Doncaster, is a dark-brown Colt, three years old, free from white, and not more than fifteen hands and a half high. He is, altogether, a very racing-looking nag, although possessing no peculiar points. His head is neat, and well set on to a light neck; his shoulders are strong, and well inclined back; large fore and back ribs...with excellent flat legs, and sound feet...The Messrs. Baily, Brothers, of Royal Exchange-buildings, Cornhill, have in the hands of the Engraver, a portrait of Sweetmeat, from the pencil of Mr. Herring, from whom we have procured our sketch; and we predict that the Plate will be a worthy addition to their splendid Publications of celebrated Winning Horses. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the magnificent Sweetmeat, the triumphant winner of the Doncaster Plate in 1845. Jockey George Whitehouse skillfully guides this dark-brown three-year-old colt to victory, showcasing their undeniable talent and determination on the racecourse. Although lacking any distinctive features, Sweetmeat exudes a racing spirit that is evident in every stride. With a sleek head perfectly positioned atop a slender neck and strong shoulders inclined back, he embodies grace and power. His large fore and back ribs contribute to his impressive physique, complemented by his flawless legs and sturdy feet. The renowned Messrs. Baily Brothers have commissioned an engraver to immortalize Sweetmeat's portrait from Mr. Herring's original artwork. This exquisite piece will undoubtedly be a treasured addition to their collection of celebrated winning horses. Dating back to the 19th century, this image hails from "Illustrated London News". Volume VII - a testament to its historical significance. It encapsulates not only the excitement of horse racing but also reflects British sporting culture during that era. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph print by an unknown creator, we are transported back in time to witness Sweetmeat's momentous triumph at Doncaster Racecourse. It serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy left behind by these extraordinary animals and their dedicated jockeys who captivate our hearts with their incredible feats on the racetrack.
