Taking the Little Snow-town, 1891, (1965). Scene from a Siberian village entertainment, painted in Krasnoyarsk, inspired by the artists childhood memories. A miniature town was traditionally built from snow and ice on the last day of Shrovetide. One group would guard the town while the other attacked. The game possibly originated with the Cossacks in remembrance of the subjugation of Siberia. Painting in the State Russian Museum, St Petersburg. From " Russian Painting of the 18th and 19th Centuries" by Vladimir Fiala. [Artia, Czechoslovakia, 1965]

EDITORS COMMENTS
Taking the Little Snow-town, 1891 (1965) by Vasily Surikov captures a charming scene from a Siberian village entertainment. Inspired by his childhood memories, Surikov depicts a traditional game where a miniature town made of snow and ice is built on the last day of Shrovetide. In this lively painting, one group defends the little snow-town while the other launches an attack. The origins of this game can be traced back to the Cossacks as they commemorated their conquest of Siberia. Surikov's attention to detail and skillful use of color bring this wintry scene to life. The troika sleighs with horses galloping through the snowy landscape create a sense of movement and excitement. Surrounded by picturesque countryside, both men and women participate in this annual event. The artist's realistic style showcases not only the beauty of winter but also highlights elements of Russian tradition and culture. This particular print is housed in the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg, offering viewers an opportunity to appreciate Surikov's mastery firsthand. 'Taking the Little Snow-town' serves as a testament to Surikov's ability to capture both historical events and personal nostalgia within his artwork.
