EDITORS COMMENTS
Torii Kiyonaga's 'The Tanabata Festival' from the series 'Precious Children's Games of the Five Festivals' (Kodakara gosetsu asobi), created around 1801, captures the joy and innocence of childhood during the Tanabata Festival in Japan. The Tanabata, or Star Festival, is celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, when legend has it that the Milky Way allows two star-crossed lovers, Orihime and Hikoboshi, to meet. In this beautiful color woodblock print, we see a mother and her two children, dressed in traditional kimono and hats, enjoying the festivities. The older boy, wearing an olive green kimono and holding a parasol, pours water from a bucket into a tub for his baby sister. She sits contentedly on a mat, dressed in a pink kimono and clutching a rose. The family is surrounded by various accessories and apparel, adding to the vibrant and playful atmosphere of the scene. The Tanabata Festival was an important cultural event in Japan, and Kiyonaga masterfully captures its essence through the use of color and composition. The green and pink hues of the children's clothing and the parasols contrast beautifully against the muted background, drawing the viewer's attention to the central figures. The intricate details of the clothing and accessories also highlight the artistic school of the time, showcasing the skill and craftsmanship of the printmaker. This oban-sized print is a precious reminder of the beauty and simplicity of childhood and the rich cultural heritage of Japan during the eighteenth century.
