Teatime Even While in Penal Servitude, 1906-1911. Creator: Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman
Teatime Even While in Penal Servitude, 1906-1911. This photograph is from an album of 47 views of convicts and structures at the Akatuy Prison, one of the main centers where political prisoners were held in the Russian Empire during the late-tsarist period. The album belonged to Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman, a physician and member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, who was incarcerated at Akatuy from 1906 to 1911. The prison was located at the Akatuy silver mine in Nerchinsk okrug (district) in the Transbaikal Territory of Siberia. Thousands of political prisoners were exiled to Siberia from European Russia and from Poland, Finland, Latvia, and Estonia (all then part of the Russian Empire) following the repression of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Criminal labor convicts and political prisoners had long been sent to Nerchinsk to work in extracting lead-silver ores in the region's mines. Irkutsk State University

Teatime Even While in Penal Servitude,
EDITORS COMMENTS
a poignant photograph from the album of Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman, captures a moment of respite amidst the harsh realities of life in Akatuy Prison during the late-tsarist period in Russia. The image, taken between 1906 and 1911, depicts a group of political prisoners enjoying a brief moment of camaraderie and normalcy as they share a cup of tea. Akatuy Prison, located at the Akatuy silver mine in Nerchinsk okrug, Siberia, was one of the main centers where political prisoners were held following the repression of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Thousands of individuals from European Russia and territories such as Poland, Finland, Latvia, and Estonia were exiled to Siberia to work in the region's mines, with both criminal labor convicts and political prisoners enduring the harsh conditions. Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman, a physician and member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, was among those imprisoned at Akatuy from 1906 to 1911. This photograph is a testament to the human spirit, as it showcases the prisoners' ability to find moments of connection and comfort despite their dire circumstances. The album, now held by Irkutsk State University, provides a valuable historical record of this period in Russian history and the experiences of those who were unjustly imprisoned. The image of the prisoners enjoying tea serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of community and the simple pleasures in life, even in the most challenging of circumstances. The photograph also underscores the resilience and determination of those who fought for political and social change, ultimately contributing to the eventual downfall of the Russian Empire and the emergence of a new era.
