EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph presents a Testimonial presented to Alderman Thomas Quested Finnis and his wife, Mrs. Finnis, in 1858. The testimonial, a stunning pair of silver candelabras, was given to the Finnis couple in recognition of their excellence in all aspects of life, particularly their benevolent and charitable works. The candelabras, standing nearly three feet high, consist of twelve wax-lights and are adorned with six female figures representing Justice, Law, Civic Dignity, Charity, Sympathy, and the City of London. Each figure holds symbols of their respective virtues, such as a sword and balance for Justice, an open book for Law, and a group of three figures for Charity. The bases of the candelabras bear the Finnis family arms and an inscription that reads, "Presented, 1858, to Thomas Quested Finnis, Esq. Alderman, and Mrs. Finnis, Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of London in the year 1856-57, by their friends and fellow-citizens, as a tribute of respect for their excellence in all the relations of life, especially in works of benevolence and charity, and as a record of the high sense entertained of the dignity, urbanity, and liberality with which they discharged their high and distinguished office." The candelabras weigh approximately 700 ounces and cost between £400 and £500. They were meticulously crafted by the renowned silversmith, Mr. Metcalf Hopgood, of Bishopsgate-street. The rich scrolls, vine-leaves, and pendent grapes that overhang the figures add to the intricate and elegant design of the testimonial. This photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1858, is a testament to the high regard in which the Finnis couple was held by their fellow citizens and a reminder of the importance of benevolence and charity in Victorian society.
