The Thames National Regatta Prize, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The Thames National Regatta Prize, 1854. Rowing prizes. Above all towers the Grand Challenge Cup, for eight-oared boats (gentlemen amateurs) - a fine silver-gilt piece of plate, with ornamental cover, surmounted by a figure of Neptune; twisted snake handles, and ornamental scroll work...in the centre of the group, is the handsome Silver Challenge Vase, for flowers, to be used also as a wine-cooler. This is the prize for the gentlemen's four-oared race...The groups of nine cups each, immediately under the Grand Challenge Cup on either side are the "scratch" race prizes...The gold oars and rudder are the most elegant we ever recollect to have seen...These several prizes have been designed and manufactured by Messrs. Edkins, of Salisbury-square, Fleet-street...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, hailing from the mid-19th century, showcases an impressive array of rowing prizes from The Thames National Regatta of 1854. The star attraction of the image is the Grand Challenge Cup for eight-oared boats (gentlemen amateurs), towering above all else. This magnificent silver-gilt prize is adorned with intricate ornamental scroll work, a figure of Neptune, and twisted snake handles. The Grand Challenge Cup serves not only as a trophy but also as a cover for the cup itself. Centered in the group is the Silver Challenge Vase, the prize for the gentlemen's four-oared race. This elegant vase can be used as a flower vase or a wine-cooler, adding to its versatility and beauty. Flanking the Grand Challenge Cup are nine cups each, which are the "scratch" race prizes. The gold oars and rudder, displayed prominently in the image, are the most exquisite examples of their kind, with their golden sheen adding to the overall grandeur of the scene. These stunning prizes were designed and manufactured by Messrs. Edkins, a renowned firm based in Salisbury-square, Fleet-street. The craftsmanship and attention to detail evident in these prizes are a testament to the artisanal skills of the time. This photograph print, originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of 19th-century rowing and the impressive prizes that went to the victors. The intricate designs, the gleaming gold, and the ornate silver-gilt make for a breathtaking display of the era's sporting achievements.
