"The Fisherman's Haunt", by G. Chester, in the Exhibition of the Royal Academy, 1862. Engraving of a painting. This picture is not only the best we have seen by the artist, but has a twofold interest - to wit, both piscatorial and pictorial...the painter, by his very title, seems to address himself especially to the gentle disciples of "good old" Izaak Walton. Moreover, he draws our attention by a quotation from Tennyson to this as being a "likely spot" for "here and there a lusty trout, And here and there a grayling". It is, however, very unkind and provoking that he does not tell us where the spot actually is, and if easily accessible. But this is characteristic. Who ever heard of an angler so committing himself, even to his bosom friend? With him, indeed, "there is society where none intrude." A pretty time of it our little fisherman would have if his solitary bliss were rudely destroyed, and his monopoly of the chances of those same lusty trout and pretty, graceful grayling unfeelingly opposed by any heartless intruders or malicious competitors. What would be his feelings if, after walking perhaps many miles, he found his favourite seat preoccupied, or if a skirmishing enemy were to open upon him from the ambush on the opposite bank?'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Fisherman's Haunt," a captivating painting by George Chester, graced the hallowed halls of the Royal Academy's Exhibition in 1862. This masterpiece, a favorite among art and fishing enthusiasts alike, showcases the serene beauty of a solitary fisherman in a picturesque setting. The painting's allure extends beyond its aesthetic appeal, as it also speaks to the soul of the devoted angler. The artist, through the title, seems to directly engage the audience who share a fondness for the gentle teachings of Izaak Walton. Furthermore, a poetic reference to Tennyson's words, "And here and there a lusty trout, And here and there a grayling," adds to the painting's piscatorial allure. However, the artist cruelly withholds the location of this idyllic scene, leaving anglers yearning for the chance to experience this tranquil paradise for themselves. The fisherman's solitude and monopoly on the waters' bounty are precious, and any intrusion would surely disrupt his communion with nature. The thought of arriving at this secluded spot only to find it occupied by another angler or worse, a group of intruders, is a distressing prospect. The enigma of the painting's location adds to its mystique, as the fisherman's secret hideaway remains elusive, known only to him. This enchanting work of art serves as a reminder of the allure of the simple pleasures of nature and the importance of cherishing the solitude that comes with them.
