"The Russian Serf", painted by Joseph J. Jenkins - from the Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water-colours, 1854. Russian peasants are all serfs; and here we see a female in the act of drawing water for the use of a party of soldiers in the distance; the employment of females in civil labour being a distinctive characteristic of barbarous and semi civilised nations. Behind, resting on the back of the old horse, is a young urchin serf whose contented look betrays the fact that he is little aware of the cruel austerities to which fate submits his afterlife; smiling as he does in his chains. Mr Jenkins, whose delicate pencil is unrivalled in this branch of art, has given a couleur-de-rose aspect to the whole subject, which though highly agreeable in a picture, we fear little accords with the stern realities of the subject. The costume is accurate and very effective...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

The Russian Serf
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating watercolor painting by Joseph J. Jenkins, showcased at the Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water-colours in 1854. This evocative work of art, described by Horace Harral in the Illustrated London News, portrays the harsh realities of serfdom in Russia. The painting depicts a Russian peasant woman, bent over a well, drawing water for a group of soldiers in the background. The employment of women in laborious tasks is a characteristic of less civilized societies, and this scene encapsulates the hardships endured by the Russian peasantry. Behind the woman, a young urchin serf rests on the back of an old horse. His contented expression belies the difficult existence that awaits him in the future. Jenkins' delicate pencil skillfully renders the scene with a rosy hue, which, although visually pleasing, may not accurately reflect the grim realities of the subject. The painting's authentic costume adds to its effectiveness, highlighting the stark contrast between the beauty of the artwork and the harsh realities it portrays. The use of watercolor medium adds a sense of fluidity and transience to the image, emphasizing the fleeting nature of the serfs' lives. The painting offers a poignant glimpse into the lives of the Russian serfs, shedding light on the social and economic conditions of the time. Despite the rose-tinted perspective, "The Russian Serf" remains a powerful and evocative work of art that continues to resonate with viewers today.
